1307 Kurmanji Kurdish words with their English meanings, grouped by first letter. 1307 of them have a pronunciation recording: press ▶ next to a word to hear it.

This list is the vocabulary behind Peyvok, our Kurdish word puzzle. It covers everyday nouns, verbs and adjectives, from family and food to weather, feelings and the natural world. Words are written in the Latin-based Kurmanji alphabet and sorted in Kurdish alphabetical order, so ç comes after c and ş after s.

How to use this list

• Learn the sounds first. Kurmanji spelling is phonetic: once you know the 31 letters, you can read any word aloud.
• Listen, then repeat. Play the recording, say the word yourself, then play it again. Pay special attention to short and long vowel pairs such as i/î and u/û.
• Learn in small sets. Pick five to ten words from one letter, then find them again in Peyvok levels. Meeting a word in a puzzle helps it stick.
